The Pastor

Father John F Cyr was born in Lafayette, IN on St. Patrick’s Day 1974. Along with his five sisters and two brothers, he was raised on a fifth generation farm in Benton County. He and his twin sister were baptized by their great-uncle, Msgr Edgar Cyr, at Sacred Heart Church in Fowler, IN. The parish school was run by the Sisters of St Francis of Perpetual Adoration, Mishawaka. Today, Fr John Cyr has 32 nieces and nephews. His parents have a strong devotion to the Eucharist and the Rosary.


He received his degree in Industrial Technology from Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana in 1996. While in his formation at Kenrick-Glennon Seminary, Fr Cyr studied at St Louis University and completed his degree in Philosophy and Letters in 1998. He then continued his formation and studies, earning a Master's Degree in Theology at Mount St. Mary's Seminary in Emmitsburg, Maryland and was ordained to the priesthood by Bishop Daniel R Jenky on May 25, 2002.


Fr Cyr is currently pastor of St Paul, Danville and chaplain of Schlarman Academy. Holy Mass and Confession are central to his priestly ministry. For over 10 years he did volunteer ministry in a maximum security prison. He was also a volunteer chaplain for the Champaign Police Department. Fr Cyr has helped lead pilgrimages to the Holy Land, World Youth Day in Spain, Camino de Santiago and most recently to Poland, Prague, Austria, and Budapest. In addition to that, he has spent time in Fatima, Lourdes, and Rome; and one trek through Chile, Argentina, and Uruguay. Fr Cyr serves on the Mount St. Mary's Seminary Rector's Council and is a member of the board of directors at Our Sunday Visitor Inc; also a member of the OSV Institute and finance committee. To support the critical work of helping women in need he joined the board at the Women’s Care Center. On different occasions, he has been a guest commentator on the BBC World News. To develop his leadership and communication skills he continued his studies at the University of Notre Dame earning his MBA, Class of 2020. Fr Cyr has a certificate in journalism from the Pontifical University of Santa Croce, Rome.


Spending time with family is important to him. His twin sister is married to a US Naval officer and they have five children. Fr Cyr keeps active on several social media platforms. Spending time with brother priests is a priority. He has made retreats at several different monasteries and enjoys working with religious order priests and sisters. The daily Rosary and the lives of the Saints give him inspiration in his priestly work.
